Hunter S. Thompson’s Harrowing, Chemical-Filled Daily Routine

E. Jean Carroll’s 1993 memoir of Hunter S. Thompson opens like this:

I’ve heard the biographers of Harry S. Truman, Catherine the Nice, and so on., and so on., say they might give the rest if their topics had been alive so they may ask them some questions. I, alternatively, would give the rest if my topic had been useless.

He must be. Oh, sure. Have a look at his day by day regimen:

3:00 p.m. upward push

3:05 Chivas Regal with the morning papers, Dunhills

3:45 cocaine

3:50 every other glass of Chivas, Dunhill

4:05 first cup of espresso, Dunhill

4:15 cocaine

4:16 orange juice, Dunhill

4:30 cocaine

4:54 cocaine

5:05 cocaine

5:11 espresso, Dunhills

5:30 extra ice within the Chivas

5:45 cocaine, and so on., and so on.

6:00 grass to take the brink off the day

7:05 Woody Creek Tavern for lunch-Heineken, two margaritas, coleslaw, a taco salad, a double order of fried onion rings, carrot cake, ice cream, a bean fritter, Dunhills, every other Heineken, cocaine, and for the journey house, a snow cone (a pitcher of shredded ice over which is poured 3 or 4 jiggers of Chivas.)

9:00 begins snorting cocaine critically

10:00 drops acid

11:00 Chartreuse, cocaine, grass

11:30 cocaine, and so on, and so on.

12:00 nighttime, Hunter S. Thompson is able to write

12:05–6:00 a.m. Chartreuse, cocaine, grass, Chivas, espresso, Heineken, clove cigarettes, grapefruit, Dunhills, orange juice, gin, steady pornographic films.

6:00 the new tub-champagne, Dove Bars, fettuccine Alfredo

8:00 Halcyon

8:20 sleep

Ms. Carroll, you’ve my consideration, I do claim. But if I am getting a grip on myself, I’m wondering: How did she get ahold of this checklist? Did Thompson map all of it out for her? Did he notice it in a diary, or jot all of it down on a serviette? Or did Carroll follow him following this regimen whilst visiting his 7,000-acre property in Woody Creek, Colorado? And, if the latter, you must ponder whether Thompson all the time lived this difficult? Or used to be this a bit of of schtick, the nurturing of a Gonzo personality now many years within the making? It’s laborious to understand what’s true, or what’s no longer.

In the meantime, if you wish to delve extra deeply into Thompson’s day by day regimen, you’ll discover HST’s supreme breakfast. It is composed of “4 Bloody Marys, two grapefruits, a pot of espresso, Rangoon crĂŞpes, a half-pound of both sausage, bacon, or corned-beef hash with diced chilies, a Spanish omelette or eggs Benedict, a quart of milk, a chopped lemon for random seasoning, and one thing like a slice of key lime pie, two margaritas and 6 traces of the most efficient cocaine for dessert.” All eaten bare and by myself. Naturally.
